SERVICES OFFERED

TheraLingual, Inc. offers speech therapy services for a wide variety of speech, language, and voice disorders. We pride ourselves on providing comprehensive, expert level therapeutic services using evidence-based practice.

Accent Reduction

We offer services to non-native English speakers to improve their communication skills, including but not limited to the pronunciation of English, whether its needed to increase intelligibility for professional or social reasons or decrease dialectal differences deemed undesirable by the client.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

Whether your child is showing red flags for ASD, has been newly diagnosed or continues to need help with communication skills secondary to ASD, we offer comprehensive treatment using the DIR-Floortime® paradigm and have clinicians trained in this intervention methodology. A link for a free screener is provided here for more information. Don’t hesitate to seek treatment, as the earlier ASD is identified and treated, the better the outcome will be.

Cleft Palate

We offer services for individuals affected by cleft palate that often exhibit learned, compensatory errors of articulation that have developed in their efforts to improve their speech. The goal of treatment is normal speech and resonance. It should be noted that individuals experiencing hyper-nasality or velo-pharyngeal insufficiency (VPI) will not benefit from speech therapy and may first need to be evaluated by a cleft palate team using specialized instrumentation. VPI is caused by a structural defect and surgical intervention may be necessary. Please visit the American Cleft Palate-Craniofacial Association for more information or to find a cleft palate team.

Early Intervention

We specialize in early intervention services for children aged 0-3 whether the diagnosis is ASD, Down’s Syndrome or any other disorder or unknown etiology resulting in developmental delay. Parent coaching and training is a tenet of our intervention program for children in this age group.

Feeding

Feeding problems can be extremely stressful for families of little ones struggling or refusing to eat. Often times, there are sensory and/or oral motor components underlying these difficulties. We use a combination approach to intervention that aligns with the SOS Approach to Feeding and TR-eat® models to provide comprehensive and individualized treatment.

Language Disorders

Specific Language Impairment (SLI) presents as difficulty understanding or processing language and/or using language to express ones thoughts, feelings, needs or wants. SLI often occurs in combination with other developmental delays or diagnoses but can also be a stand-alone diagnosis.

Speech Sound Disorders

Speech sound disorder is a general term used to describe many different articulation disorders including phonological impairment, apraxia of speech, and mild articulation deviances. Phonological impairments refer to predictable patterns of speech sound errors, which can be mild to severe. Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS) refers to a motor planning problem, which results in inaccurate movement of the speech articulators. Often children with CAS, will show inconsistent error patterns, vowel distortions and groping and/or trial and error behavior. Simple articulation deviances refer to mild articulation errors such as inter-dental or lateral lisps. Its important to accurately diagnosis speech sound disorders, as treatment approaches can vary greatly and can determine progress and time spent in treatment.

This practice has a clinician trained in PROMPT and Dynamic Temporal and Tactile Cueing (DTTC) both of which are evidenced based treatments for CAS. For more information about CAS, click here

Stuttering

Stuttering or atypical disfluency is usually identified in early childhood and need for treatment is based upon the type and severity of disfluencies observed and the frequency at which they occur. If intervention is deemed necessary, we recommend a combined intervention approach that involves both indirect and direct treatment practices. Treatment begins with Parent-Child training program to help families create a fluency-facilitating environment and encourage understanding and acceptance of stuttering. Then if necessary, more direct child-focused treatment will follow, focusing on direct modification of communication skills. For more information visit Stuttering Help.

Voice

A voice disorder occurs when voice quality, pitch and loudness differ so much that it calls attention to itself, interferes with communication or causes the speaker or listeners distress. Even if others do not perceive the speaker’s voice as different or deviant, an individual may still have concern that their voice is abnormal and does not meet their daily needs. Dysphonia can originate from many different causes, therefore it is of the utmost importance that laryngeal imaging be completed to correctly diagnose the cause of vocal dysfunction. We are able to provide auditory-perceptual assessments of voice, which is used for pre and post treatment measures but before voice therapy can begin an instrumental measure (e.g. stroboscopy, aerodynamics) should be performed to diagnose the reason behind any voice difficulties. We suggest seeing an otolaryngologist that specializes in voice and laryngeal imaging.
